MillionCount.com for a Million Visitors?

Postby Drizzle on Fri Apr 04, 2008 2:21 pm

I don't know if you guys heard about the guy who decided to count to a million, in front of his webcam which was online 24/7? I don't know why millioncount.com went offline eventually or if the dude was able to finish the count. But according to alexa.com, some time around late June 2007 the site's daily reach went up to almost 70 million visitors. :o I must have been one of them.

If you had to get a few million visitors within a month, would you go as far as doing something similar or something crazier?

I remember the dude was actually selling ad spaces on his wall, chair and event the bathroom door whenever he had to go do his thing. :D He also had a long list of sponsors, so he must have earned a great deal from this experiment.

Unique ideas are the best money earners on the internet. Fact.
You can't get anything better than a unique idea. I've seen so many things that are so simple, but they are so successful because they're unique. The man who took his photo everyday for nearly 7 years, such a simple idea yet everybody wanted to copy him. The 1million pixel website, such a simple idea yet netted the creators a lot of money.

How i wish i had a unique idea :(

You're right, it's all about thinking out of the box. One thing that gets me though is this: how did that dude from milliondollarhomepage get to that million before everyone else? I mean, how do we know he didn't copy the idea from someone else and just developed it faster?

Another example is Youtube. A few weeks ago the CEO of Tudou.com was being interviewed on TV here in Shanghai. I was curious to know what his site was about and found out that it was a youtube-like site. I immediately assumed he copied Youtube. I then checked dnscoop.com and found out that Youtube was created on February 15 2005, while Tudou was created on July 13 2004. A few months before Youtube!

Just for the record, 'tudou' is Chinese for potato (the site was intended for couch potatoes). :)

How unique is a unique idea? I don't know. The only difference between Tudou and Youtube is Youtube sold their idea better. You have to know how to sell your idea.

Okay, okay you win.
But, sites like youtube aren't unique, and never will be. Youtube is simply a video site, there is nothing unique about it. I bet there has been hundreds, it's just that youtube became succesful quickly. I HIGHLY doubt youtube, or todou was first, it was just youtube got lucky, it started well.

But unique ideas do exist.
