When Selling a Full Website, What is the Legal Process?

Postby Mike on Fri Mar 14, 2008 1:27 pm

Hi,

I am just now getting into the "selling" portion of the industry and was curious to know tha legal exchange process. We are about to sell off some social networking websites that are fully developed, and though we feel that selling will be simple we don't know the legal process for the exchange to take place since these will be our first for the sales board.

Any advice?

Depends on the price:

If it's under $1,000, get 1/4 up front, give them the info, then get the other 3/4.

For $1,000-$10,000, get half now, half later

And anything above $10,000 should go you get 3/4 and then get the rest after they get the information.

Im not totally sure if there's some sort of standard that people go by, and then it depends on how good you know and/or trust these people, and on their reputation. If they are really well known, then I would say you can give them the files before any payment, but if they are some no one knows about, I'd get full payment first.

I think Escrow would be key in the case of a high-priced website. I personally have never used it before, but it's quite a straightforward procedure. The buyer should send the money to Escrow (third party service) and then the website files can be sent to the buyer while Escrow holds the money. After the buyer receives his goods, the seller can then claim the money at Escrow. I hope I've explained that properly. ;)
