Addicted To Buying Domains

Postby Mike on Fri Mar 14, 2008 1:19 pm

Just curious to what new domainers in the biz have made the mistake of spending hours in front of a computer finding and registering domains that you feel VERY bad about after the fact.

I just registered a ton of single word cc's and a few others and am sure I can sell them at a bit over reg cost but the gamble is killing me!

I know research the market before purchasing etc. but I cant fight my gut feeling when I see that special name.....I HAVE TO BUY IT!

Any long time domainers have any words of encouragment/advice on this?

I actually have spent hours and pulling all-nighters searching for a good domain at reg fee. :D Registering for domains is definitely addictive, and we all feel we've got a million-dollar name in our portfolio! :D

Mike, if you're buying domains for the sake of owning them then there's nothing to feel bad about. But if you're registering them in the attempt of making a profit, why don't you try "tasting"? I think Dynadot allows you to keep the domain up to 5 days (or 9 days, I'm not sure). In this time, you can try to find a buyer. If you can't find someone willing to buy your domain, you can always let it go and get your money back.

At first when i got into "Domaining" it was more of a feeling that i needed to buy as many domains as possible, never mind the quality. That ended up with me owning 40ish .info's the were totally useless and wouldn't sell. In the end i got rid of them for about 50% less than what i bought them for, but that was the best thing I've done.

Having just domains that are worth at least reg fee, maybe even 2x as much is great. It gives you time to concentrate on selling or buying specific domains, with having 100's of equally useless ones you have to constantly watch for expiry's and have to constantly take any opportunity to sell them, because they're worth nothing and there will never be a demand for them.

But yeah, i guess i could say I'm addicted to buying domains. More recently I've been just regging .com's and .net's but great, available ones just keep seeming to pop-up. Whenever i have spare $$ i spend it on domains. It's left my urge to buy T-shirts lagging behind.

Ive never been one to do this. Most of the domains I have bought in the aftermarket, but I have only registered a few domains for myself. Some from lists others post and then just some I believe that have value to them.

I think you are investing too much time into searching for domains just for the sake of it surely it is better to have quality rather than quantity?
