Your Worst Domaining Mistakes EVER?

Postby Drizzle on Mon Apr 07, 2008 6:49 am

Only about 6 months into domaining and I've already made some silly mistakes. :( Then again, every pro domainer will tell you that mistakes in this field is inevitable.

1 - Registering a domain that sounds catchy to me...but unfortunately, not catchy to others and thus getting a "less than reg fee" appraisal.
2 - Finding an unregistered catchy domain that inspires me to want to develop it...and getting a mind block after registering it so it pretty much rots in my portfolio.
3 - Buying a not-so-bad LLLL.com at what's presumably a low price only to realize it's got a V letter somewhere in the middle.
4 - Buying a premium domain from a pro at a reasonable price, thinking it's going to earn me a few bucks on parking...and then realizing that they had it up for sale at a cheap price BECAUSE it wasn't earning them anything.
5 - Outbidding everyone at an auction, and not wanting the domain 24 hours later (auctions can be quite tricky).

My worst mistake is probably just registering several domains without studying first. I could have been in on the 4 letter rush if I would have just read up more on the scarcity of short names. Even when the list was dwindling I never even bothered to get owxn.com which was on my que forever. I wish I could have had just one at reg fee.

HAHA - the regrets of domaining.

Hopefully I'm not saying the same thing about something else two years from now.

I would have to say just randonly registering domains - when I first started, any time I would get an idea, I'd reg the domain :P Other than that, nothing really for me :)

I think my worst mistake was when I bought a domain and didn't take the time to develop it....at all. I feel like it was money down the drain. I should take the time and develope it now but there never seems to be enough time to keep up with everything. I'm sure you can't get anything for an undeveloped domain, right?

I hope you don't mind a newbie question here.

I'm curious about what you mean specifically when you refer to developing it.

Do you mean you build up some traffic to the domain and monetize it with some ads?
